Technology Reflection
As “old school” teachers, we tend to frequently rely on test scores, class work and homework “mostly handwritten or typed” reports to give us a picture of how our students are progressing academically. Rarely do we look at outside factors that could affect their performance, or at the fact that the way we are teaching them might not give us a clear picture of their understanding. Using technology gives us the opportunity to differentiate the way that we instruct. After studying educational technology I am able to create a technology infused lessons and have become a more effective teacher.
The three top emerging technologies in my field that I have identified are:
1. Video game design. I chose this technology because as an educator it incorporates the strategy of project-based learning. Working together students can split the tasks of coding, graphic and concept design. This takes the concept of group work to another level.
2. K-12 Online Schools are emerging faster than I would have imagined. I chose this technology because of the advantages that these schools offer. They are very convenient and they allow students to work and learn at their own pace. With a strong internet connection, students can learn from anywhere in the world. These schools also benefit kids will disabilities or victims of bullying.
3. Wikis in Education. I chose this technology because it is a free way to engage your students in the learning process. In online classes using wikis instructors can post their syllabus and carry on group discussions. Students can build a website with the help of their classmates, share ideas about the design and agree to disagree online.
Since learning of this technology, I have joined wikis of my personal interests and become more efficient in the use of them. The emerging technology that interest me the most is K-12 online schools. In the state of Michigan Governor Rick Synder has stated that this is the wave of the future for Education in our state. I want to be a part of it. I have a plan to take the required courses to become a certified online teacher. I attend constant professional development with Wayne County RESA. This resource keeps me current exploring new technologies and specific strategies monthly, and annually. I am also awarded State Board – Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) for my participation in this professional development. Everything in this course has been useful to me and my career. My favorite aspect of this course was the instructor with her knowledge and delivery of the content. I have truly enjoyed learning this semester.
