VI. Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice.
A. Model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
I infuse technology into every lesson I teach. It is a very large part of our every day life. Students in the K-12 system today will be exposed to technologies that have not been created yet. Teaching legal and ethical practice is an important part of my curriculum and I use the Michigan Technology Standards (METS) as a guide for my instruction.
I also assign and encourage the use of websites designed to teach and model responsible internet use. The site Netsmartz is used by students, parents, educators, and law enforcement. It provides age-appropriate resources to help teach children how to be safer on- and offline.
B. Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
I consider myself a teacher of all students including those with learning disabilities. Diversity must be taken into consideration when planning lessons and providing instruction. I hold certifications in Elementary K-5 all subjects (K-8 All Subjects Self Contained Classroom) and LEARNING DISABILITIES (SM) K-12.
I am a big proponent of differentiated instruction. One way that I provide this service is with assistive technology. This allows my students to function in the least restrictive environment. The Assistive Technology Training and Information Center (ATTIC) provides assistive technology support for my special needs students.
C. Identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity.
Virtual field trips are becoming very popular among teachers of the 21st Century. They give students a chance to see and learn things that wouldn't normally be available to them. Virtual field trip lesson plans are an economical way to expose students to people with different cultures and backgrounds.
Every student is special in their own ways. Virtual field trips allow them to accept their differences and express pride in them. These virtual experiences will support multicultural awareness and diversity.
D. Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
Safe and healthy use of technology resources is very important for teachers and students. I am very astute when it comes to teaching this standard to my students. I use this Digital Citizenship Presentation to emphasize the importance of using technology in a responsible manner.
Computer ethic laws aim to regulate internet usage as well as address problems with piracy, plagiarism, identity theft, cyber-bullying, and cyber-stalking. I promote the ethics contained in the Educational Technology Plan provided by my school district.
E. Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
My school district is committed to meeting the technology standards established by the national and state leadership and have adopted NETS and METS as its Educational Technology Standards without modification. This gives me a clear cut blueprint to facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all of my students.
